Last night I watched the Roast of Donald Trump that my friend had recorded. I was eager to see it mostly because I heard Marlee Matlin was on it. I was unsure if she was one of the "roasters" or not, but I found out quickly that she was. Every deaf joke made to her was followed by some sort of funny gesture she did which reminded me a lot of myself. I love when people can laugh at themselves and take the jokes, and better yet, make the jokes. She did great, I laughed quite a bit and was thrilled for Gilbert Gottfried's appearance. I like that her presence on the show opened up for more diverse jokes. It broke away from the typical fat, ugly, slut, pothead, crackwhore, old, poor, and rich jokes. I'm not advocating that we all make fun of the deaf, but it creates an awareness for her to be there and to sign and see the dynamic of how people react to her presence. All the things the other comedians try to pull on her were things I've grown up with. The covering of the mouth while talking just to fuck with me, etc. I will leave it to you and your ways of going about watching the episode, but I will provide a video of her doing the roast.
The awesome thing about her being there was that she had a connection with Trump for being the Celebrity Apprentice. On top of that, she actually didn't roast him, but Gottfried did. I love that she even brought up the concept of sign names. Just about everyone in the deaf community gains a sign name which is usually a gesture or combination of signs that is personal/significant to the person rather than having to fingerspell their name out.
The next point about the roast that absolutely has to be pointed out is The Situation. A very bad situation in fact. He mentioned it being his first night on comedy, and Jeff Ross said that it will be his last. It was so fucking horrible. It's already all over the Internet of him failing soo sooo bad. This further made Marlee's appearance more awesome because she went on towards the end and brought the crowd back to life when The Situation nearly killed them. Here's the video, but I must warn you it is very hard to watch. I honestly can't watch it again.
I'm sure that's enough to crush your Tuesday. I'm out.
