Understand the Victim

As done a couple times already, here and there, I am going to expose you to more of the presentations that I enjoyed today in my women's studies class.
A comparison of music regarding sex from the older days to now: The student particularly showed us two songs, Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On" and Tyrese's "On Top of Me."
North Country: This is the second presentation on this film, but here is some additional information, the Jenson v. Eveleth Taconite Company.
The Candie's Foundation: watch the video featuring Bristol Palin on the site. I particularly liked how the student presented this topic. She was explaining how this foundation is creating videos and other advertisements of people in which the average girl can relate to. So that means the "average" girl can relate to Fergie, Hilary Duff, Bristol Palin, Hayden Panettiere, and others. The Bristol Palin video is like a slap in the face. It sends a message much like this "Since I'm rich, I can have a baby" and so on. The girl presenting this seemed pretty engrossed in the topic, I enjoyed it!
Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains: a film from the 80's that features Diane Lane who I could barely recognize at first. The clip is hooking enough to get you to want to see the film.
Precious: the very popular film based off the very popular novel Push. Both of which I want to soon experience.
Jennifer Knapp: a Christian singer who just recently came out publicly as a lesbian. She also had a very interesting interview recently on Larry King Live about her sexual orientation and her Christian status. Google it!
Family Guy: the presenter of this topic focused on Family Guy episodes that feature issues of anorexia and bulimia.
Pink: the student is focused on Pink and her push for independence and power as a female.
NOH8 Campaign: this is a series of photographs taken to make statements against Proposition 8 in California that bans same-sex marriage.
U by Kotex: Kotex [the company that makes tampons and pads] made a series of commercial advertisements, hilarious ones, addressing the taboos that people have about women and vaginas and their periods [something so natural to just about all women!!] You gotta watch these videos! Specifically these at least: So Obnoxious, Reality Check, Buy Me Tampons, and many others whose links are not working for me at the moment.
Legally Blonde 1 & 2: Most of you are aware of these films, I won't lie, I've seen the first one several times on television. But the idea here is that Elle Woods is herself and does all that she can with what she knows.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: the finale of the entire show ends with empowerment for women. There is no clip I can link you to since the student brought in the dvd.

Also, today was the day I presented my topic, of deafness and CSI. I played this clip, as well as provided the URL address for those who want to watch the entire episode that I focused on, "Sounds of Silence." I informed the class that I was born hard of hearing and have been wearing hearing aids in both of my ears since I was two years old, hence this topic is quite personal to me. I mentioned the popularity of the show CSI and about half or more of the class has watched it before. As well as I talked about how important I find awareness to be, it is the first step to bridging differing groups together. And I find that CSI does an excellent job bringing awareness to various issues surrounding deafness. After talking and playing the video clip I concluded to share additional awareness to my class by teaching them some American Sign Language, particularly the signs for "Yes," "No," "Thank you," "Deaf," "Hearing," and "Sign." And before I finished I told them not to clap for me when I'm done but to applaud, deaf style. Which looks like this:

Yes, waving the hands in the air. Remember it is a visual language. And it's fucking beautiful.
