Left-Handers Facts Pt. 10

Based on studies that combine handedness surveys, approximately 12 percent of Americans and Western Europeans are left-handed. From an evolutionary standpoint it can be good to differ, and that difference alone could account for the persistence of left-handedness through human history.

Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Commodus Antoninus was the son of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. This lefty ruler was named Caesar at the age of five, and co-Augustus at the age of seventeen. The popular movies The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) and Gladiator (2000) were loosely based on the career of the emperor Commodus.

Born on this date [September 16th] in Schenectady, New York, actor Mickey Rourke trained as a boxer before pursuing an acting career. This lefty is known for playing gritty, marginalized anti-hero roles. He received praise for his performances in The Pope of Greenwich Village, Barfly, and Angel Heart. Rourke went back to boxing as a professionally in 1991, but retired in 1995.

Do you know what make scissors “left-handed”? One difference is the grip on the scissor, obvious to any left-hander. The other difference is that the left blade is always on the top. This gives you a clear view of the cutting edge and allows the cutting action of the left hand to push the blades together rather than pushing the blades apart.

Most anthropologists agree that handedness was probably split evenly between lefties and righties thousands of years ago. Artifacts found all over the world prove that Stone Age man made crude instruments that could be used with either hand.

Rubber-faced comic actor Jim Carrey grew up in Canada. An extrovert from day one, at age ten he mailed his resume to fellow lefty Carol Burnett. In junior high, he was allowed a few minutes at the end of each school day to do stand-up routines for his classmates. He has appeared in more than thirty films, including The Mask, Cable Guy, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Fun with Dick and Jane. Nominated for numerous awards, he won a Golden Globe for Man in the Moon and The Truman Show. Carrey became an American citizen in October 2004.

It was no coincidence that the fourth finger of the left-hand was chosen for the wedding finger in 300 B.C. Doctors at that time believed a nerve from this finger ran directly to the heart.

The last fact is of particular likeness to me, despite my lack of interests in marriage. I had never known why the left ring finger is the ring finger so it's cool to finally know why it is so. Here is some more information on that. Myths, history, anatomy, superstitions, all of the likes are very fascinating to me, especially when they still exist today or have become norms in which origins are not commonly known, nor even questioned.
