Based on studies that combine handedness surveys, approximately 12 percent of Americans and Western Europeans are left-handed. From an evolutionary standpoint it can be good to differ, and that difference alone could account for the persistence of left-handedness through human history.

The last fact is of particular likeness to me, despite my lack of interests in marriage. I had never known why the left ring finger is the ring finger so it's cool to finally know why it is so.
